Commenting on Photos & Videos now active
WeHuntSC.com - Commenting Feature Active on Media Gallery
Tell'em what you think about their images and/or videos

While the new media module (the part of the application that lets you upload photos & embed videos) is way better than our previous photo gallery, it has been bothering me that we haven?t been able to comment on the photos and videos.  Sometimes the technical stuff takes longer to work through and communicate?especially when you?re planning a wedding, but now it is possible!  I?m pretty excited about it too.

If you go to the ?Game? pages or ?Trail Camera? page you will see (when you click on an image or video) that you can now post comments beneath the pictures while inside the lightbox.  Hopefully, this added functionality will better serve our audience? aka? you!

For all you tech-heads, this commenting feature is available via some major AJAX (asynchronous javascript & XML).  Matter of fact, the whole modal/lightbox effect is AJAX.

Also, if you have been looking at the site a lot, when you first go to the site you may not see the images because the cached page in your computer.  You will need to press F5 or refresh in order for them to appear.  When it first happened, I thought I had somehow deleted all the images in the gallery and I almost had a heart attack, but then after I thought about it, it made sense.

So ? comment away and tell Hoot how good his dogs look on the rabbit page!

CBP

Thermacell to Sponsor Turkey Video Hunt of the Year Competition
  WeHuntSC.com - Thermacell's new lantern
  Thermacell's New Lantern

The WeHuntSC.com team is excited to announce that Thermacell is sponsoring this year?s ?Turkey Video Hunt of the Year Competition?.  If you hunt turkeys in South Carolina and don?t know about Thermacell, then you need to be introduced? that is unless you just like to get bitten by mosquitoes.  Thermacells are a must have to hunt in any warm weather period of the year.  We use them during turkey season and early parts of deer season.

This year Thermacell is releasing a new product called the Thermacell lantern which is what the competition will get along with a thermacell!  Here is an excerpt from Thermacell?s web site about their newly released lantern:

The Outdoor Lantern has many updated features: eight LEDs offer twice as much light as earlier ThermaCELL models; the easy-grip handle makes the lantern easy to carry or hang, and the lantern weight, at under a pound, makes transport a breeze. In addition, the lantern and mosquito repellent can be used separately or together.

?We have created a more rugged lantern for outdoor enthusiasts who want a portable, light-weight solution to mosquitoes. By offering customers a dual function lantern that has a highly effective repellent as well as illumination options, we are making outdoor activities safer and more enjoyable,? said Bill Schawbel, president of The Schawbel Corporation.

The ThermaCELL Outdoor Lantern operates on a single butane cartridge, which heats a mat releasing allethrin, a synthetic copy of a natural insecticide found in pyrethrum flowers, creating a 15 x 15 foot comfort zone. Each repellent mat provides up to four hours of protection and each butane cartridge provides up to 12 hours of operation.

The new ThermaCELL Outdoor Lantern features:

  • Eight LED lights, with two illumination settings

  • Twice as much light as previous ThermaCELL lanterns

  • Up to 98% protection from mosquitoes, black flies and no-see-ums

  • 15 x 15 foot comfort zone

  • Easy grip handle

  • Rugged outdoor structure

  • Lightweight - 13oz

  • Mosquito repellent operates on a single butane cartridge

  • Light operates on four AA batteries (not included)

  • Available February 2010

  • MSRP: $29.99

  •

If you follow the site, then you know that Thermacell has been with us since day one and we?re happy that they are sponsoring this year?s Turkey Video Competition.  To learn more about Thermacell, just jump on over to their web site at www.mosquitorepellent.com.

GroundHog MAX partners with WeHuntSC.com

The WeHuntSC.com team is excited to announce that Tufline?s GroundHog MAX is getting involved with WeHuntSC.com in more ways than one!  What is a GroundHog MAX you might ask?  A GroundHog MAX is an awesome attachment for 4-wheelers used to create remote food plots.  And by ?attachment?, I don?t mean a ?pull-behind?!  The GroundHog MAX attaches directly under the back end of an ATV.  Since the attachment can be flipped and carried in ?transport mode?, and is no wider than the 4-wheeler, so anywhere you can get the 4-wheeler?you can have a food plot.  What?s probably best is for me to show you a video of it instead of trying to describe it in words.  Check out what I mean?

Embedding that video sure saves me time trying to explain how it works!  Now that all you deer hunting, ATV owners are drooling, I?ll tell you how can you get one.  There are 3 ways that I know of? either win the ?Buck of the Year? competition next hunting season, go to your local Tractor Supply (after the first of April), or travel on over to www.ATVPlowPlus.com and place your order online.

The thing that we deer hunters will love about the  GroundHog MAX is that it provides the possibility of creating food plots way back deep in the woods?that?s right?exactly where the big bucks like them!  I believe the GroundHog MAX will change the way hunters view food plots and food plot creation as the GroundHog MAX opens the door to new opportunies.  As you can see below, the WeHuntSC.com team is already busy getting our remote food plot underway and yes, we are using the GroundHog MAX to do so!

Hunters Night Out

If you read these blog entries, then you know that Mike Lee from Tecomate Seed is going to give a presentation at our ?Hunter?s Night Out? when he comes up in the Spring.  Keith Frachiseur, the inventor of the GroundHog MAX, has also agreed to speak that same day.  As I mentioned earlier, Adam Smith ([email protected]) is spearheading the ?Food Plot Journey? and our ?Hunter?s Night Out?.  We will provide more information as the time gets closer, but just know that Tecomate Seed & the GroundHog MAX representatives will both be on hand to speak and we?re looking into getting food there as well!

So all in all, GroundHog MAX will sponsor next year?s ?Buck of the Year? competition, co-sponsor our ?Food Plot Journey?, and will present at our ?Hunter?s Night Out? and we are glad they are on board.

Clint

QDMA Partners with WeHuntSC.com
  WeHuntSC.com - QDMA LogoWeHuntSC.com - QDMA Logo

Quality Deer Management Association
The WeHuntSC.com team is pleased to announce that QDMA is working with us to bring our site audience a monthly ?Article of the month?.  Quality Deer Management (QDM) is a management philosophy/practice that unites landowners, hunters, and managers in a common goal of producing biologically and socially balanced deer herds within existing environmental, social, and legal constraints.

QDMA publishes the Quality Whitetails Journal on a regular basis and the articles featured on our site will come from recent editions of the journal.  The most-respected deer biologists, researchers and experts from around the country can be found on the pages of Quality Whitetails. No other publication offers the level of fresh, practical and reliable information on food plots, habitat management, deer behavior and deer hunting. Receiving Quality Whitetails is like having the experts along with you on your hunting property allowing readers to take what they learn and apply it directly to their land.

After speaking with the marketing director for QDMA, I learned that the QDMA organization initially started in coastal South Carolina!  So it?s only appropriate that the South Carolina hunting web site and QDMA be involved with each other.

We hope the articles featured on the site will enrich your knowledge of all things deer hunting and, over time, help the quality of deer in our state.

2009 Deer Hunting Competitions Winding Down
We?ve got some pretty good deer in our online competitions for this hunting season.  Those guys (and gals) from South Carolina are coming across some nice deer!  If you think you?ve got a good buck and a good picture, then be sure to post it into one of our competitions before January 1st!  Winners of the competitions will receive:
  • A $50 gift certificate to Bass Pro Shops
  • A case of Wildlife Energy Drinks
  • A Thermacell with a carrying case
  • A Vinyl WeHuntSC.com sticker for your car/truck
I know some of you have been holding back because you think your deer isn?t the biggest on the page, but keep in mind that the biggest on the page doesn?t mean they will necessarily win!  We?re judging according to many factors, one of which is the quality of the picture!  So submit your photos regardless of if your deer is the ?biggest? on the page or not!

A long, cold winter?

In recent discussions with people, I?ve noticed a common thread.  The common thread is that we are getting ready to have a long, hard winter.  During one conversation, a wise man (as he called himself) told me that ?mother nature will take care of mother nature?.  He noted that one reason for all of the acorns this year was because nature had to get the animals healthy enough to make it through a tough winter.  This guy swears by it and even said ?Go write that on ?ye blog up?er on the internet?.  I did investigate and found other people indicating the same thing.  Here?s a link to a web site out of Boston where the writer denotes that a large acorn harvest points toward a tough winter.

A few weeks later, I had a different gentlemen tell me that the woolly worm predicted a cold and hard winter.  He said the woolly worm was really black which is a sign of the winter to come.  His comment peaked my interest since I had just had the previous conversation with the other gentlemen.  We talked about it for a while and I made a mental not to explore this concept some more.  Sure enough, I looked online and found a link to a paper in North Carolina discussing the woolly worm?s predictions.

After these conversations, I got to researching signs of a tough winter and found the following bullet points on AllExperts.com .  Some pretty compelling information that, if accurate, means we are going to have a long, hard winter.  Check it out.

  • Woolly Worms: The wider the brown band, the milder the winter.  Also the greater the number of them late in the season also indicates a mild winter.
  • Dandelions: Dandelions late in the season indicate a mild winter.
  • Fog: The more fog in August the more snow in the winter. Another month we keep an eye on for fog is October. The same is true, the more fog during this month the worse the winter.
  • Persimmons: Cut in half, the inner part of the persimmon seed.  If this happens to look like a spoon it means grab the shovel and prepare for a snowy winter.
  • Ants: Large ant hills in the summer means a cold/snowy winter.
  • Onion Skin: The skin of onions attempt to reveal clues about winter.   Thick skin means a cold winter with a thin skin leans towards a mild prediction.
  • Apples: The same can be said of the skin on apples that are grown.
  • Leaves: The longer the leaves stay on the trees, the colder the winter.
  • August Temps: Hot temperatures in the first week in August usually means a cold winter.
  • Horses: Even a horse attempts to clue us in on upcoming weather.  If the hair on the horses mane is thin a mild winter lies ahead.   If it's thick, grab those thick winter parkas.
  • Fall Thunderstorms: If they occur in the fall that indicates a cold winter.
  • Squirrels: The saying is if they have bushy tails it will be a cold/snowy winter.
  • Wind: A windy fall is often followed by a cold winter.
  • November: There is a saying that says a warm November yields a cold winter.
  • Corn: Farmers would always look at the corn shuck... the tighter the shuck the harsher the winter.
  • Birds: Bird watchers noted that when the birds migrate early that was a sign of a cold/snowy winter.
  • Nuts: The more nuts and acorns the colder the winter.
  • Deer: Much like the horse, the thicker the hair on the neck the colder the winter.
  • Hornets: We've all heard that the lower the hornet's build their nests the colder the winter.
